Volunteer with Summer Scholars

Summer Scholars is currently looking for hard-working, self-motivated teens age 15 and older who are interested in volunteering to work with elementary school-aged students this summer. Apply online by MARCH 6, 2015.  Click here for more information. Summer Scholars is an award-winning, community-based program that partners with Denver elementary schools to provide high-quality reading, language and math tutoring, enrichment and family literacy to 2000 children and their families each year. Volunteer positions include:

Reading Buddy

Work one-on-one with elementary aged students in the classroom by reading with them and working on vocabulary building. Must be at least 15 years old.
ECE (Preschool) Classroom Aide Work with Summer Scholars’ youngest learners, birth through six years, whose first language is not English. You never know what you might be doing from holding a crying child to helping with snacks and crafts. For teens age 15 and older.
Central Office Assistant A lot of what happens with the students is possible because of what happens in the central office. Support all our programs by helping with office duties such as filing, phone calls, copying, mailings, supply preparation, data entry and more. Must be at least 15 years old.
Materials Master Volunteers will play a crucial role helping Summer Scholars organize and prepare materials for its award-winning literacy programs. Much of our curriculum is custom-made and created by hand. Care and effort in producing and re-stocking these materials directly affect the quality of tutoring for the students. Teens 15 and older welcome.
Recreation Support Aide

After a morning of focused literacy instruction, the afternoons are all about activity. Work with small groups of students in crafts, sports, science, field trips and more. Note: for this one, you must be 16 years old or older.

Summer Scholars also has limited openings for paid ECE Assistant Instructors. Applicants must be 15 years or older. The position assists teachers who focus on helping parents to build their English oral language skills that increase their abilities to help their children succeed in school. Along with the adult classes  Summer Scholars offers Early Childhood Education classes for children who are not old enough to be in the regular summer literacy program. Classes are held daily (Monday through Friday) June 15th to July 24th. Classes will be held within the hours of 8:30 – 11:30 AM. Hourly wage is $8.00 to $10.00.
